My Daily Visitor

November 16, St. Margaret of Scotland

I will seat the victor beside me on my throne. — Revelation 3:21

Mass reading: Revelation 3:1-6,14-22 / Luke 19:1-10

Turn Up the Heat

Today’s first reading from Revelation is a little too close for comfort. “Because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.” I often feel my response to God’s message is lukewarm, at best. It’s not for lack of trying. I say the words of prayers. I hear the words of Scripture. But it’s still business-as-usual in the details of my life. I haven’t let Jesus remake me into someone truly on fire with His love.

How do we go from lukewarm to on fire? We can take our cue from Zacchaeus in today’s Gospel. He was anything but lukewarm, climbing a tree just to get a glimpse of Jesus and then offering to give away half his possessions. This is what Jesus wants from us: total devotion, unbridled passion.

Prayer: Dear God, may the fire of Your transforming love engulf me, heart and soul.

The Wounded Soldier Prayer

I received this prayer today from “Pray Often” and want to share this with you today…

I came across this prayer in a box of religious books, pamphlets and leaflets that I have collected.  I found it touching and wanted to share it during this Month of the Rosary, the Rosary being the greatest of all Marian Prayers.

*** *** *** ***

Letter from a Wounded Soldier

Mary my queen, Mary my mother, I call out to you from the deep depths of my sin, the state of my soul a proof of what happens when I rely on my own strength which is nothing.  Out of ignorance, weakness and, worst of all, malice I have committed great sins made all the more terrible when taking into account the many graces I have trampled under foot and the means of amendment which I have despised.

I fear God and the account I may soon have to give of my worthless and wasted life.  Surely, I have been nothing but a thorn in your Immaculate Heart.  And yet I have the courage to call you Mother.  For you are a mother of mercy and how can I fear you when in you is only goodness and love?

I am a disgusting specimen of humanity’s fallen nature.  But you, the Immaculate, have never known sin and have never been its slave.  It is therefore to you whom I go to be healed.  Please do not despise me.  Intercede for me, O August Queen of Sinners.  If only you obtain for me the great grace to love you, I will be assured of being loved by you in return.

You are God’s favorite and most precious creature, exceeding in glory all of the saints and angels combined.  As the Mother of God, you are the very source of their glory, having carried in your virgin womb God himself as your only son, Our Lord Jesus Christ.

To love and be loved then, by a creature so dear to God and so far above all other creatures would surely be a great sign of salvation for my soul.  It is therefore in you whom I place all of my trust,  praying not for consolation at present but for final perseverance and a holy death.

In that great hour of dread it may very well be that I will not have access to the vital Sacraments instituted by your divine child and preserved by his Church.  And if I have at that time grave and deadly sins on my soul, desirous but unable to confess them to a priest of your son, to whom shall I turn?

Ah, to you my dear mother!  Let not divine justice tear me away from your loving arms.  It is in anticipation of that singular and terrible moment, the moment that will determine my eternity, that I now pray in advance for your heavenly assistance.

I now at this moment accept from the hand of God whatever kind of death it may please him to send me at the end of this life’s short journey, with all of its pains, penalties and sorrows that it may entail.  I offer this through your immaculate and most motherly hands so that my unworthy sacrifice may be accepted by God to be united to the Supreme Sacrifice he made of himself on the Cross at Calvary before your motherly eyes, piercing with a sword as it were your own very soul.

Good Mother, pierce my heart with love of him who was pierced to a cross for love of me: Jesus Christ Crucified.  Wash my soul in his precious blood.  Give tears to my soul for having offended so good a God who has forsaken himself so that I may have salvation; a God who has been pleased to take my sins upon himself so that I might wear the garment of his grace purchased with his own merits.  Grant me to rather die than to offend again this God, the God of all creation of whom there is no other.

And should I have the great misfortune to forfeit God’s grace and endanger my inheritance once again by sinning mortally, as I have so often fallen before, always breaking yesterday’s resolutions, may I always return to thee, my advocate (and to the Sacrament of Confession).  May you then replace, O Mother of the Church, my corrupted heart with your Immaculate Heart so that God may be pleased to once more dwell within me, reunited with his holy mother.

It is by your motherly hands that graces are given to souls and by your motherly hands that souls are lifted into heaven.  Such is thewill of God being the path established by your Jesus himself who on the point of death made you mother of all the living and gave you to us as such in the person of the Apostle St. John on Calvary, saying to you “Behold thy son.”  and to the disciple “Behold thy mother.”

Because you are my mother, it is with confidence that I ask you to be with me at the hour of my death, my baptism into eternity.  Drive away the devils and protect me from despair at that most critical time.  Protect me under your mantle and show your Son to me then not as a just judge, but as the most merciful Savior.  Bring me at last to the heavenly gates wherein I will praise and bless you throughout eternity for the happiness which I will owe to thy powerful intercession.  Amen

Good Friendship Prayer

I was asking our Lord this morning, how do I handle a difficult, an abrasive friendship… and He sent me this quote from St. Thomas and this friendship prayer…

“St. Thomas  writes on the virtue of gratitude: Since true friendship is based on virtue, whatever there is contrary to virtue in a friend is an obstacle to friendship, and whatever in him is virtuous is an incentive to friendship. On this way friendship is preserved by repayment of favors, although repayment of favors belongs specially to the virtue of gratitude.”

Thank You, God, for the grace of stilling my thoughts and calming my emotions.  Thank You, God, for Your grace that helps to transform, renew, and uplift my thoughts instilling me with ever-renewing life.

May God be with you,

Elizabeth

A Prayer for Those We Love

In the name of Jesus, I loose the Holy Spirit into the life of [....] to draw
him to the saving grace and the love of Jesus and the Father. In the name
of Jesus, I pray to the Lord of the harvest to send laborers of the Word of
God across the path of [....], and I even ask the Lord of the harvest to make an appearance to [....]l that he may be drawn to the saving grace and love of our Father and Jesus.

As soon as you say the prayer aloud, there will be changes in your [.....]
life. Keep praying the prayer each day. Nothing can stay the same when prayer is prayed for someone.
